American Food with a Twist

What do you think of when someone says “American Food”? Pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, that gross cheese stuff that comes out of a tube, etc. Yeah, so, I’ve never been a fan. However, when you take something as basic as a pizza and turn it into something better, then we’re talkin.

Pizza Bandiera.

Bandiera meaning “flag” in italian, this was a rather vegan take on the pizza margherita, which uses mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil as the flag colors. This used a bruschetta-type topping of red peppers, basil, and onion to make the flag. It was actually very good; you cook down the vegs with some white wine to create a deeper flavor which concentrates the pepper and onion differences. Prettty yummy. 🙂

Sooo, another American classic….. the sloppy joe. Whoever came up with that name anyway? Poor guy, immortalized as the messiest eater ever. :/ Geez.

Anyways, veganizing a sloppy joe may seem rather pointless, but I decided to try this out just for the heck of it. (Btw, vegan sloppy joes are called “nice joes.” Cute, right?) Instead of ground beef, these had a base of brown rice (tempeh can also be used), interspersed with onions, soy sauce, and other seasonings. They were surprisingly good – kind of like eating dirty rice, but more moist. These were also served on gluten-free buns, so we ate pretty guilt-free this night. 😉
